Ms. Avantika Saraogi is a young pioneer in the world of sugarcane and bioplastics opertions, bringing a passion and drive that is truly exceptional. Having graduated with distinction (Cum Laude) and a B.A. Hons from Scripps College in Claremont, California, USA, Avantika is now the fourth-generation member of the promoter family to join Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. (BCML).
In a remarkable display of perseverance and vision, Avantika is steering her company towards establishing a PLA (Polylactic Acid) manufacturing facility, which shall become India’s first ever bioplastics plant. PLA is a biobased, compostable & low emissions plastic made from renewable resources like sugarcane, commonly used in packaging and 3D printing. Over four years, she navigated numerous challenges to herald, not only India’s maiden bioplastics plant but also a global milestone, where sugarcane will be processed into PLA for the first time at a single location. Boasting of a global capacity of 75,000 tonnes annually, the plant is slated to commence operations by 2026. This bold move promises not just increased turnover and profitability for BCML but also leaves a significant environmental impact. By aligning technology providers, nurturing talent, securing downstream capabilities and garnering government support, she has led a journey towards sustainable progress and business success.
At BCML, Avantika not only spearheads PLA (bioplastics), cane opera- tions and sugarcane development but also oversees procurement, grower relations, strategy, technology, mechanization, sustainability and communications and has helped take the industry to newer heights. Her vision is nothing less than a world that recognizes and embraces the incredible potential of sugarcane. But Avantika’s drive extends beyond the bottom line. She is dedicated to promoting sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of sugarcane cultivation and the sugar mill complex. For her, this is not just a job, but a calling, one that she actively pursues with unwavering dedication.
Her greatest strength lies in the fact that she is inspired by the values set forth by her late grandmother, Padma Shri Meenakshi Saraogi, lovingly called as ‘Madamji’, founder of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited. Avantika is a true pioneer; never being content with the status quo, but driven to push beyond the boundaries of what is possible, carrying the legacy of her illustrious grandmother forward. And she’s done this by investing in people management, ensuring to improve the lives of our farmers with holistic development.
Donning the hats of a loving wife and a doting mother, Avantika is also a fine art photographer and a competent horse-rider. She also has successfully steered the new-age culinary culture in Kolkata in her earlier role as a leading and successful entrepreneur in the culinary world. Her passion, vision, and commitment to sustainability make her an inspiring leader and a true force for change in the world of sugarcane.
